At the end of last year, designaffairs China hosted our first roundtable event, on digital health. Our panel featured decision-makers from Novo Nordisk, Roche, GE Healthcare, Google, Ping An Health Cloud and Shanghai Pharma Health Commerce.

Here are some of the points of view shared by our panelists in response to key questions raised at the event:

How will the rise of chronic disease affect the Chinese healthcare system?

Jeppe Theisen,

Vice-President Marketing, China Region, Novo Nordisk

"114 million people suffer from diabetes everyday in China. Around 70 million of those are not in treatment. So awareness and diagnosis of diabetes is incredibly important because it will be a major problem for the country going forward if diabetes is not treated in a timely way."

What is the biggest challenge facing China's healthcare industry today?

Yue Jiang, Senior Product Director & Head of Healthcare, Ping An Health Cloud

"China’s challenges are two-fold: one is medical treatment, another is health management. We are lacking in both user awareness and service provision."

Founder & CEO, AXA Lab Asia

"The main challenge for health from an insurance company perspective is to provide more coverage for customers. Only 3% of the population is well covered, currently. What interests me is how technology can help us to meet that potential."

How can digital tools and platforms increase impact for products and services?

Ping Zhou, Managing Director of Shanghai Institue of Design and Innovation

Former Head of Operations, Greater China, Google

"With Internet comes an era of personalization. We have to leverage the advantage of the Internet to achieve a level of personalization that was impossible during the industrial era, for more effective, lower-cost diagnosis and treatment."

Jeppe Theisen,

Vice-President Marketing, China Region, Novo Nordisk

"Individualised treatment is everything. You can have the best products in the world, but if the patient doesn’t take it as prescribed, then it doesn’t work. I really believe these platforms can help patients much more. We’re all here to create better value for patients, and better value means better lives."

What are the key considerations for an organisation embracing digital transformation?

Luciana Li,

Director of Digital Excellence, Roche

“一个公司如果要真正地转型,必须具备前瞻视野,这上面的挑战首先有知识性的条件,如调整内部改革的管理规范。其次是合作伙伴。然后是领导力,许多转型都是由上至下得以实现的。没有高层之间的共识, 要实现数字化举步维艰。”

"First we have to build a vision. There are also challenges around revamping the knowledge base, and transforming internal governance and regulations. Another one is partnerships. Last, but not least, is leadership. Many transformations follow a top-down structure. Without aligning with upper management, digitization will be impossible."

Seth Zhang, COO, Shanghai Pharma Health Commerce

"As a traditional company we cannot solely rely on ourselves to tackle the problem of digital transformation. So we are forming partnerships with e-commerce, finance and Internet companies. We are embracing the multi-disciplinary nature of the challenge, to have a better shot at succeeding."

How can design and innovation help transform Chinese healthcare?

Duncan Trevor-Wilson,

Global Design Director, Advanced Concepts, GE Healthcare

"I think as the world is going digital, people can see that if you really want to elevate your brand you have to connect with people. And if you’re not connecting with people, the brand is lost. And design plays that role, to connect technology to people, and now large industrial companies are really understanding that you can really elevate your brand, and you can make technology work in a whole different way."

Global UX Director, designaffairs

"I go to the hospital and then I’m really just a little brick in a factory, you know? Someone says, "Sit down there", someone else says. "Come along here", we take an image, someone picks me up and so on. Mobile devices can help to turn this around, and make the patient the owner of his or her medical journey, own the information and become a bigger part of it."

Gerd Helmreich,

Global Head of Healthcare, designaffairs

"It’s a new way to give medicine, as a service provider, not only as a device manufacturer. I think here is where I see the most potential for the future."

designaffairs:roundtable is our new regular series of panel discussions focusing on design, innovation, disruption and transformation in China.
